Applying as An IT Professional: What Employers Want to See in Your CV

Recruiters are endlessly scanning resumes, yet they know who to call for an interview the next day. The competition to get a job nowadays is much tougher. How do you make sure you make the cut?

Check if you are really qualified. If the company says they’re looking for someone with at least five years of IT experience, they mean it. Even if you have stellar grades in college, if you are not what they’re looking for, you’re not it.

Say it right. There’s no need for you to write your accomplishments since elementary school, especially if it’s not relevant to the position you are applying for. Write down your most recent and remarkable accomplishments that will give you a greater advantage of being hired. Check your professional language, while you’re at it. As much as possible, limit your CV to two to three pages max.

Consider how your overall resume looks. First impressions last. No employer would want to hire a candidate with a disorganized resume. Consider font styles and sizes, as well as alignments. Present your CV in a fun yet professional way. Make your resume easy to read and without inconsistencies.

Promoting Corporate Dynamism Through Meaningful It Workplace Culture

In the popular imagination, the word “corporate culture” appears to be another touchy-feely buzzword invented by executives as a means to pad their annual speeches. Properly understood, however, it remains one of the most important concepts in management and plays a role in boosting productivity, fostering innovation, and improving workforce retention.

A healthy workplace culture is particularly vital in the IT department, which carries on its shoulders the continued function of all other departments in a modern company. An IT department whose culture fosters innovation is one marked by constant improvements, which in turn have a profound overall impact to company growth.

Even the best and the brightest of IT professionals can be bogged down by the challenges of indecision, often brought about by the need for consensus. Although seeking collaborative efforts through mutual agreement is admirable on its own, there are times when the need for a quick and decisive move should outweigh the instinct for deliberation. An atmosphere that focuses entirely on deliberation not only wastes valuable time and impedes change but also fosters confrontational discourse among its members. Disagreements could beget a noxious culture that could jeopardize the rest of the company.

IT professionals are also often among those included in a skeleton crew. The age of the 9-to-5 workday for the IT professional has passed as more and more companies have employees needing IT support outside of normal work hours.

In addition to striking the balance between harmony and decisiveness, IT departments must also be adaptable and willing to go the extra mile. IT managers must, in turn, provide the necessary room for the staff to enjoy some degree of work–life balance.

Why Data Scientists Have the Best Jobs in the U.S.

While some people’s idea of the best job in the U.S. is perhaps a renowned surgeon or a Michelin-starred chef, the latest report from recruitment site Glassdoor revealed that data scientist, in fact, holds the distinction, scoring high in number of job openings, salary, and career opportunities.

Industry observers are not that surprised that the data scientist has it good in the U.S. With the growing prominence of big data, more and more companies are searching for talents who can discerningly cull data useful in developing better products or services or a new revenue stream. In fact, Linkedin job postings for data scientists number in the thousands, with both tech and non-tech companies seeking out these professionals.

The lucrative outlook for data scientists, especially those who thrive in statistical analysis and data mining, has even led some IT professionals to consider a career shift. And even those without formal training in data science can find their place in the relatively young field. The only requirement is a passion for problem solving.

Industry observers expect demand for data scientists to continue growing for the next couple of years as more and more companies embrace big data. Breaking down a massive amount of data into bite-sized information is what organizations want, and only data scientists can help them achieve that.

ICT Centers Improving Education in Developing Countries

Information and communication technology (ICT) centers are now being set-up in different locations to serve marginalized communities underserved areas. Many IT companies have focused on developing countries, but communities with populations underserved due to prejudice are also benefiting from this technological diffusion. Women, people with disabilities, the unemployed, and immigrants are perfect priorities for increasing access to ICT centers.

One of the major roadblocks facing these communities is the lack of teachers. There are many volunteers, but even then, the sheer number of the underserved is staggering. ICT centers address this problem by limiting the number of people required to man the center while aiming to teach dozens of students at a time.

The streamlining of manpower is of particular importance in impoverished countries. Small ICT centers, with around five to 10 computers, can teach around 100 students annually. This is a viable workaround for staffing and budget constraints.

Education is a major determinant of economic success, both at individual and country level. Countries with educated populations have better opportunities to improve the circumstances inherited by future generations.

Given that IT has become a major component of education, many IT companies sponsor several ICT centers worldwide and develop software to be implemented within educational systems to improve student access to information and increase the efficiency of schools and teaching institutions.
